GOD TV HISTORY:
Lowrie and Wendy Alec in the first GODTV broadcast suite in Newcastle, England.
GOD TV was formed by Rory and Wendy Alec in 1995 in England as the first Christian television network on Christian Channel Europe, the continent. It began airing on October 1, two hours a day. It increased to seven hours in 1997 and to 24 hours in 1999. The "God" logo was published in 1997 and the Christian Channel has been renamed the GOD Channel. The GOD channel became part of the Dream Family Network, later known as GOD Digital, and then in 2002 as God TV. That same year, the GODTV transmission link was moved to Israel. International expansion via satellite is planned and GODTV has been launched in Africa and Asia with new offices in Cape Town and Chennai.
In 2003, a GODTV office was established in Orlando, FL, USA, and in 2005, GODTV was launched in Australia and New Zealand. Good TV launched DIRECTV, the largest satellite platform in the United States, in 2006, and opened a new office in 2008 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Rory Alec was the network's CEO from 1995 to 2014, when he resigned due to "moral failure," according to GOD TV. The couple separated in 2015. Wendy Alec attributes the end of her marriage to the devil and has an affair with her husband. Wendy Alec served as President and CEO prior to Ward Simpson's appointment, which lasted for two years.
Communications scholar Pradeep N. Thomas situates the GODTV narrative within the wider framework of Christian fundamentalism's neo-imperialist goal, contrasting God TV's Christian Zionist themes with Franklin Graham's War in Baghdad. Graham presented as the victory of Christianity over Islam. . Thomas noted that in India, GODTV provides a platform for "hierarchical lockdowns" between various Indian Christian groups, expressing Christian solidarity that is in part against Hindu nationalism.
By 2014, the network could reach 262 million households worldwide, including 93 million households in India, and employs 200 people with Simpson as president and CEO.
